Americans are gripped by fears of more terrorist attacks as top government officials disclose horrifying intelligence reports of devious plans by Islamic fundamentalists. What really keeps the U.S. security forces on their toes is the rumor that Osama Bin Laden may be alive and may plan more terror strikes. And, such unconfirmed reports drive the average American crazy with fear. >>Related News The FBI Director Robert Mueller has warned that it was ‘inevitable’ that suicide bombers like those who have killed several people in Israel would eventually strike inside United States. On his part, US Vice President Dick Cheney besides Senator Bob Graham, who is the chairman of the Intelligence Committee, have also issued warnings. The fear that Osama bin Laden may plan the strikes adds to the tension. And there are reasons to doubt he may be alive to plan such attacks. In the latest bin Laden video, he reportedly says that any country siding with Israel is a target for Islamic terrorists. On last Sunday the Islamic news agency al-Ansaar, based in Birmingham, England, claimed that it received the 40-minute videotape from a Pakistani security official in Islamabad, last month. The tape reportedly includes separate parts, some of which were shot in March in the southern Afghan town of Spinboldak, near the Pakistani border. The tragic reality is that the world’s most wanted terrorist keeps resurfacing through rumors and unconfirmed reports like these, making it difficult to even judge if he is dead or not. Another U.S. intelligence report has said that Laden received a kidney transplant in late February and was in the pink of health. Even American ally, Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf, who had said that Osama died of kidney failure, later backed off and said he did not know if he was alive or not. All these add to the woes of the average American who is struggling to bury September 11 behind him. In the latest video, Osama was shown and quoted as saying, "The war is between us and the Jews. "Any country that steps into the same trench as the Jews has only herself to blame." He added that if he "specifically targeted Britain and America - this war is not confined to them - it served as an opportunity for other nations to revise their stance. The latest video was broadcast a day after Mullah Omar, chief of the defeated Taliban, was quoted by an Arab newspaper as saying that Bin Laden was still alive, hiding in the mountains of Afghanistan. What would now keep disturbing the common American is the worth of a war his country waged to capture Laden. The US spent around $14 billion for the mindless war. Though it managed to get rid of the dreaded Taliban from that country, it could neither capture Osama nor purge his memories. His country is shelling out millions of dollars more to keep its troops in the war-ravaged nation. What adds shame to a hurt American’s mind is not financial loss but the sheer fear of living under constant fear. |
